Then if the leave don’t lift off, they could just rot away? I’m worried that putting rocks on the leaves makes deep imprints in the concrete that will hold water.

Hi Rose, yes you peel the leaves off after the cement has dried. The oil that is applied on the vein-side helps it to release easily.
